Corn cob pipes

Why smoke a corn cob pipe?

At first glance, a corn cob pipe can be surprising. Smoking your tobacco in a corn cob? What a strange idea! Yet corn cob pipes have been made for more than a century, and many pipe smokers around the world use them.

Corn cob pipes are particularly appreciated for their lightness. They are comfortable to hold and easy to take with you wherever you go. For us, the main benefit of a corn cob pipe really becomes clear once you start smoking it.

Corn is a naturally porous material. The bowl absorbs some of the moisture and impurities from the tobacco, helping to deliver a cool, smooth smoke. This is precisely the sensation that pleasantly surprises smokers when they try a corn cob pipe for the first time.

A lightweight pipe that is particularly enjoyable to smoke:

The lightness of corn cob pipes is clearly an advantage. Unlike some relatively heavy wooden or meerschaum models, almost all corn cob pipes are, on the contrary, very lightweight. Once the pipe is in your mouth, you can easily forget you're even holding it, which makes for a particularly pleasant smoking experience.

Would you like to try smoking a pipe? A corn cob pipe can be an excellent first pipe. Corn cob pipes are very affordable, allowing you to discover the world of pipe smoking without spending too much on your first purchase. Later, if you enjoy it, there's nothing stopping you from investing in a slightly more expensive model.

A particularly interesting pipe for switching between tobaccos:

Corn cob pipes have another quality that smokers really appreciate: their neutrality. Here's why: when you smoke different tobaccos in the same briar pipe, the aromas can become absorbed into the wood and affect the flavour of the next tobacco you smoke. This is known as cross-over. As a general rule, this is why it is preferable to dedicate one pipe to each tobacco family.

Corn, on the other hand, retains much less flavour. You can therefore switch more easily from one tobacco to another without picking up the flavours of the previous one.

The corn cob pipe: an American tradition

When we talk about corn cob pipes, we immediately think of the United States. The famous "corn cob pipes" have been part of American pipe-smoking history since the 19th century. More specifically, corn cob pipe production developed in the state of Missouri. Missouri Meerschaum is now the best-known brand in this field.

Some corn cob pipes have even become famous. How? Because American personalities have smoked corn cob pipes! General Douglas MacArthur, for example, is regularly associated with his famous large corn cob pipe.

How is a corn cob pipe made?

The manufacture of a corn cob pipe is very different from that of a briar pipe. A special variety of corn is grown, then each cob is carefully selected, dried and worked so that it can hold tobacco.

Corn cob pipes do not try to imitate traditional briar models. They offer a genuinely different experience. In our opinion, that's why they continue to have their devoted followers over the years.

How do you care for a corn cob pipe?

Caring for a corn cob pipe is fairly simple. As with a briar pipe, it is important to regularly clean the inside of the stem and shank using suitable pipe cleaners. Regular maintenance helps maintain a good draw and keeps the pipe clean, making it more enjoyable to smoke.

A corn cob pipe is less robust than a wooden pipe, that's a fact. We therefore do not recommend smoking it several times a day. It is best to let it rest for at least 24 hours before using it again.

Which corn cob pipe should you choose?

Not all corn cob pipes have exactly the same shape. You'll find straight and bent models, with larger or smaller bowls and stems of different lengths.

The choice depends above all on your habits and preferences. If you're looking for a simple and lightweight pipe to get started, a classic model such as the "Legend Rob Roy" is a perfect choice. If you're already used to smoking a pipe, you can opt for models with a larger bowl. This allows you to pack more tobacco and therefore enjoy a longer smoking session.

As they remain very affordable, you can easily be tempted by one or two different models. For example, one pipe that you keep at home and another that you take with you wherever you go!
