Terminus pipes are designed in Saint-Claude, in the Jura region, at the Grandclément & Gauteron factory. They are distinguished by their patented S.G.D.G. No. 8439 system. This internal design, which we will describe in detail below, was conceived to offer smokers a purer smoke. By reducing the impurities inhaled into the mouth, they guarantee a more pleasant and less irritating experience for the tongue/palate.
Important information before getting to the heart of the matter: the Terminus pipe was invented in the 1920s in St-Claude. So we are talking about a creation that already has more than a century of history!
Now let's remove the stem from a Terminus pipe to see what's inside... First of all, we can see that the stem has been drilled through and that there is an aluminium tube in the center. This large cavity, similar to that found in Peterson pipes and known as a "condensation chamber", is followed by two holes drilled down to the base of the bowl (rather than just one, as is usually the case with a traditional pipe). Another aluminium tube (tenon) can also be seen on the stem side. When the stem is put back into the mortise, the two aluminium tubes fit into each other. This is precisely what makes Terminus pipes so unique, as the smoke is forced to zigzag before it can exit through the pipe. This design allows the smoke to cool more effectively before it reaches the smoker's mouth!
Depending on the Terminus model, some are fitted with a horn stem and others with an ebonite (vulcanite) stem. In addition, the end of the shank (i.e. at the mortise) is sometimes reinforced with a copper- or silver-coloured ring. Almost all Terminus pipes are straight in shape, but you may also be lucky enough to find half-bent or bent models.
The manufacture of Terminus pipes was stopped during the 20th century. All Terminus pipes still available on the market are therefore rare gems today. They have become highly sought-after items among enthusiasts and are primarily aimed at connoisseurs and collectors of antique briar pipes.
