In the world of tobacco pipes, carved wooden creations clearly occupy a special place. In France, Roger Vincent is one of the last artisans to make carved pipes. We are very proud to offer you the exceptional creations of this master pipe maker and sculptor, as Roger Vincent truly has unique expertise. More than just simple briar pipes, the pieces he makes are true works of art!
Roger Vincent has devoted much of his life to carving briar pipes. He began as an apprentice in the 1960s with his father, Léon Vincent, himself a pipe carver in Saint-Claude. He is now the only pipe carver in France. Roger Vincent loves a job well done and puts his heart and soul into every creation. Proud of his craftsmanship, he enjoys sharing his passion with as many people as possible. After years of perfecting his technique, he was awarded the prestigious title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) in 1994.
Our shop, La Pipe Rit, has been located in Saint-Claude, in the Jura region, since 1996. For us, promoting the expertise of local pipe makers, and in particular that of master pipe makers such as Roger Vincent, is and always will be a matter of course. We have had the pleasure of offering Mr Vincent's creations for nearly 20 years, both in our shop windows and on our website. Here's a little anecdote about our website: the very first order placed on pipe.fr in 2002 was for a pipe carved in the likeness of Georges Brassens! Among Roger Vincent's many creations, you will find his sculpted pipes representing politicians, writers, musicians, gods and animals. The craftsman's flagship models remain undoubtedly the famous Fisherman ("Loup de Mer") pipe and the "Georges Brassens" pipe, two must-haves that continue to appeal to enthusiasts.
Even though carved pipes are more like collector's items, they can of course still be smoked. The bowl, drilling and stem are all designed in the same way as a traditional pipe. Whether you smoke or not, carved pipes are sure to appeal to you, as each creation tells a story: that of a craftsman and his precise movements. Giving a carved pipe as a gift is much more than just giving an object: it is giving an unforgettable gift that your loved ones will remember for a long time!
The price of a carved pipe by Roger Vincent depends mainly on its size, the level of detail and the time required to make it. Small models (often representing animal heads) are available for less than €100, allowing any enthusiast to discover the sculptor's talent at a very reasonable price. Intermediate models, which are more elaborate and require more hours of work, generally cost between €100 and €200. This range includes pipes bearing the likenesses of the presidents of the Fifth Republic. Finally, exceptional, larger pieces can cost several hundred or even several thousand euros (with the addition of real precious stones).
Pipe carver Roger Vincent is now retired. He still carves a few pieces each year, but does not produce models other than his usual classics (Georges Brassens, Serge Gainsbourg, etc.). It is therefore not possible to have a new carved pipe made to order (from a photo or subject, for example). However, if you are a DIY enthusiast, we also offer pipes that can be personalised in the form of briar blocks to be carved. These pre-drilled briar blocks are designed for the most creative of you. With just a few tools, you can shape your own pipe and give free rein to your imagination!
